Notes from interview with Erin Convery (“Victim of Kyleigh's Law”)
Pulled over August 3rd, 2015
Passed cop and believes he saw her young age while she was driving and was then targeted
Going only 5 miles per hour over the speed limit
Given 3 tickets
Ticket 1: Speeding (5 miles per hour over on a quiet non busy road)
Ticket 2: Not having red stickers displayed on car (Convery’s family believed the red stickers would lead to their daughter being pulled over and targeted for her young age)
Having more than 2 people in the car (Convery had 3 and was driving her friends home from a party)
Cop claimed “I’m at the end of my day here and I don’t usually pull people over around here, but when I passed you young lady you seemed to be going too fast.”
Cop was not using a speed tracker just going off of what he “believed was speeding”
Cop called Convery “young lady” and claimed he noticed her young age and then pulled her over
Convery believes the cop wanted to show her a lesson for making a small mistake and put multiple fines on her
Fined $300 total for all offenses
“I understand why the law was put in place, but other than being used as a way for cops to know you're underage and target you for tickets I don't think it really has a purpose. People also get concerned that creepy people or pedophiles may try to follow them with the knowledge that they are underage, and that can be scary to think about while you're driving around with the stickers. I think first-year drivers should be able to drive comfortably without the fear of being pulled over or targeted because of little red squares on their license plates. They are new drivers and still trying to get used to the roots. They don't need to worry about anything else but the road in front of them, so yes I don't see a need to the stickers and I think they should be vetoed. “ -Convery
